Caribbean Christmas Sweet Delights – Caribish Delight

Turkish delight is one of our family Christmas favourites and its very hard to find in Dominica, or indeed in many of the islands. So sticking to my principles of trying to create recipes using as much of what we grow on our Caribbean property as possible, I have made a thinly disguised Turkish Delight with a mystery twist from my garden and called it Caribish Delight.

Naturally it did’nt stop there, and so we now have an interesting selection of Christmas Sweets to offer visitors dropping in.

Gelatine is readily available locally as a gelling agent, so I used that to set my sweets, although there maybe better alternatives elsewhere.

It’s Christmas time once again and in the Caribbean we have some very distinct ways of celebrating the season. Here are a few from around the region.

In Dominica, one of my favorite Christmas time traditions is “bursting bamboo.” I feel as though I’m in the middle of a world war, as I hear the loud bomb-like noise coming from the area. Traditionally bamboo bursting commences a celebratory activity.

Christmas in the Caribbean is a warm-weathered social event where you spend time visiting friends and family and joining in the local festive fun. At the homes of your relatives and loved ones you will surely be offered a selection of seasonal drinks that really get you in the spirit of Christmas.

Sorrel is a number one favourite for many people. Made from the petals of the sorrel plant, the fruity and tart drink is a deep red beverage. It is often made with ginger and spices for extra heat and flavour. Sorrel is usually served chilled although it can also be warmed and some add a splash of rum too. As well as being deliciously refreshing, Sorrel is also very nutritious and is said to have anti-cancer properties and boost the immune system.

Christmas Greetings

Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our readers.

We hope that the next year brings a lot more people to our Caribbean shores whether just to visit or to invest in property. We are here to help and advise. We have only just started our blog on the website and hope that we get a lot of in put from our readers in the year ahead.

It is my husband and my first Christmas in Dominica, we are looking forward to celebrating with a lot of the friends we have made throughout the year. We also have a puppy that we bred called Tipe, Tippy for short, whose first Christmas on Earth it is, so celebrations all the way around.
