Moving to paradise doesn’t always mean you’ll stay in the first place you pick. Many people from Europe and North America choose to leave home and set up their house in the Caribbean for a variety of reasons. Some people move for the beautiful climate and gorgeous natural beauty.

Other people may move for employment reasons or to keep the cost of living low. Whatever the motivation, in today’s world, the availability of technology can help make moving easier. Relocating to the Caribbean, these days, is no longer a case of jump on the first passing ship with your trunks! It can be a lengthy process involving years of research and planning. Very often we overlook just how much we can utilise the internet and certain apps to facilitate our travels. The region has some of the world’s most expensive per unit cost, which creates an economic vulnerability and fossil fuel dependency on other nations who don’t have the Caribbean’s best interest at heart.  Caribbean energy consumers pay between four to five times as much per unit of electricity as the continental USA and Europe. As an example Aruba used to spend 16% of its economy on importing 6,500 barrels of diesel fuel a day to generate electricity to serve 110,000 people.

This is changing, and as a result there are opportunities opening up on all the islands for alternative energy technology supply and support.

Energy Efficient Exteriors for Caribbean Homes

Do you know that by letting heat escape through improperly sealed windows and doors, you are wasting money on higher energy bills?If we were to spend just a couple of hours twice a year, we can find ways to make the outside of our home more energy efficient. At first it may seem overwhelming, but it is time well spent. The savings on your energy bills will be well worth it.

Here are a few culprits that can drive energy bills higher:

By not properly sealing windows and doors, you are letting way too much of the heat in your home to escape. To save money on your heating bills, find and fill any drafts in your home.

Do a walk around the outside of your home and observe if there are any areas that need to be sealed. Because our home exteriors are constructed with more than one material, be sure to look where these different materials come together, like the foundation and exterior brick. Also check where the chimney joins your aluminum siding. Be sure to look at all the outside corners of your home also.

You must seal any and all cracks in the exterior of your home. Find the appropriate materials to seal your home. Do the job right the first time. Your work will last longer when it is done with the right materials.

Inspection of exterior pipes and faucets are a must. Exterior plumbing fixtures must be sealed all around leaving no gaps. Windows and doors should be checked during the inspection. Caulk any gaps and make sure they have a tight seal.

You can eliminate leaks by mounting your air conditioners into the wall instead of window mounts. Ensure that there are no gaps around your air conditioners. Look at getting a vinyl or plastic cover to place over the outside of your unit during the cold months. This will prevent drafts through the unit during the winter.

Check to make sure your home is properly insulated. This will save you an incalculable amount of money. Thoroughly inspect the attic. Your attic must have a vapor barrier under the insulation to be effective. Water vapor passes through the ceiling. Excessive moisture can lead to ineffective insulation and future structural damage. Look at the different vapor barriers that can prevent this from happening. For your home to be energy efficient, make sure all gaps are sealed.

If it is economically feasible, replace your doors and windows with energy efficient models. The initial investment will be justified by lower energy bills. The cost to heat your home during the cold months, makes ensuring that the exterior of your home is properly sealed is a necessity.

How Green Roof Systems Save Your Business Money on Heating and Cooling

There are many advancements in building materials that assist in saving money and energy. Though research on this topic was initially launched for energy preservation purposes, it also helps in saving money as well as preserving environment.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that nearly $40 billion is spent to air condition buildings in US, which amounts to one-sixth of the total
electricity generated annually. In order to cut down these costs, EPA has come up with different roof materials and plans.

Roofing products should meet two specific conditions namely

  • (1) They must be reflective, referring to the amount of light energy being reflected away instead of absorbing and
  • (2) They must have high emissivity, referring to the quickness of how the absorbed energy is emitted into the atmosphere again.

By research, it has been found that light colors are effective in reduction of peak demand for cool energy in buildings. Normally, the roof system is the heavily exposed part of a building to sun and it tends to absorb energy, serving as a large heat sink. Hence based on the color of the roof and its reflective nature, the temperature rise within the roofing system can be altered. When the roof is enveloped by a white reflective material similar to a single ply membrane, plenum air space temperature lowers to 90ºF unlike 120ºF in the case of dark-colored roofs.

The building owners will be able to save between 20 and 70% of the cooling energy used in the building. These reflective roof coatings can also slow down the aging process of the underlying roof materials, thus contributing to savings in roof replacements. Reflective roofs along with insulation can lower the energy consumption drastically. In addition, if it is a low-slope roof, it is more beneficial.

Owing to less heat being absorbed by the roof, energy consumption as well as thermal shock is minimized. Since less heat is absorbed and even the absorbed heat is emitted back, the energy or fuel necessary to air condition the building is reduced.

Another type of roof that helps in saving money and energy is a green roof, which comprises a vegetative layer grown on the rooftop. Such a roof is able to offer shade and avoid heat through evapotranspiration, leading to reduction of temperatures of roof surface as well as surrounding air. These roofs act as insulators, thus reducing the demand for energy necessary to cool and heat the building. Therefore, based on the nature of roof materials, money can be saved.

A few months ago I wrote about the problem of airline emissions being worse in the tropics. I’d love to be reporting to you now that things have changed, the problem is solved and we can all live happily ever after but unfortunately not. Climate change is real and a huge challenge for the Caribbean and the entire world.

However, the optimist in me still wants a positive story so I’m posting about one airline who is actually addressing the climate change issue head on and striving to make a difference. Nature Air in Costa Rica has been a ‘zero emissions’ airline since 2004. No, they are not running their planes on air but they do offset their emissions by paying local landowners to preserve threatened portions of the rainforest. According to the company they have saved about 500 acres in the Osa Peninsula which has equated to an offset of 20,000 tons of carbon dioxide.

An independent panel, which consisted of 522 well-traveled experts and aided by George Washington University in Washington DC, considered the qualities that make world-wide island destinations unique using six criteria weighted according to importance: environmental and ecological quality; social and cultural integrity; condition of historic buildings and archaeological sites; aesthetic appeal; quality of tourism management; and outlook for the future.

Most islands in the Caribbean have, colloquially speaking, the light – to you and I, oodles of constant mains electricity – connected to every corner of the territory. However, there are a few islands that don’t. One reason for this is the remoteness of the region, terrain, previous hurricane damage and often lack of population. Dominica is one the Caribbean islands that has all of the aforementioned drawbacks and consequently does have intermittent electricity supply.

Waitukubuli is Dominicas indigenous name and translates as tall is her body, so not surprisingly mountains and valleys are commonplace. The island is proud of having 291 square miles with 365 rivers; much of the island is virgin rain forest and has never been explored. It has great potential for growth and discovery; indeed, I think it is paradise on earth with a high rate of self-sufficiency. Any fruit, vegetable or tree will grow, you just plant a branch cut from a bush, pop it in the ground, leave it for a few weeks and bingo! – Suddenly you have another bush!
